Brazil joins the International Trademark system from October 2019
At the beginning of July, Brazil submitted its application to join the Madrid Protocol for the Registration of International Trademarks. This means that starting October 2, 2019, Brazil can be included among the countries eligible for international trademark registration, either by filing new international trademarks or by subsequent designation.
Following Canada's accession, this is certainly another important addition to the international trademark system, bringing the number of participating countries to 121.
Accession to the international trademark system could indeed help boost the domestic economy, making it easier for foreign companies to protect their brands in Brazil and for Brazilian companies to register their brands abroad.
Brazil is the fifth economy in the Caribbean and South America to join the international trademark system, following Antigua and Barbuda, Cuba, Mexico, and Colombia.
