The United Arab Emirates (UAE) joins the International Trademark System!

On September 28, 2021, the United Arab Emirates government submitted a request to the Director General of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) to join the Madrid Protocol for the Registration of International Trademarks. The Protocol will enter into force on December 28, 2021. This means that starting December 28, 2021, it will be possible to include the UAE among the states eligible for international trademark registration, either by filing new international trademarks or by subsequent designation.

The United Arab Emirates is a state composed of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Qaiwain. Its strategic location offers it a privileged position as a bridge between the major world economies, between East and West.

The United Arab Emirates is now the third Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to join the Madrid Union, following Bahrain and Oman.

This is certainly a significant addition to the international brand system, bringing the Madrid System's membership to 109, with a total coverage of 125 countries.
