Canada joins the International Trademark System from June 2019

On March 17, 2019, Canada filed its accession to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks with WIPO.

This means that many Italian companies doing business in Canada will finally be able to seek trademark protection through international registration. Owners of already registered international trademarks will also benefit from this change, allowing them to designate Canada through subsequent designations. Another important new development is Canada's accession to the Nice Classification.

Trademark registration is subject to renewal within 10 years from the date of registration (up from 15 years until June 2019).
