Malaysia joins the International Trademark System in December 2019

On September 27, 2019, Malaysia filed its accession to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks with the WIPO International Bureau, bringing the total number of member countries of the Convention on International Trademarks to 106.

Starting December 27, 2019, the date the Protocol enters into force for Malaysia, it will be possible to include Malaysia among the countries eligible for international trademark registration, either by filing new international trademarks or by subsequent designation.

Until now, this was not possible: if you wanted to register a trademark in Malaysia, you had to register it directly with the local trademark office.
